Hours after President Clinton signed a bill overhauling the telecommunications law, the American Civil Liberites Union and 19 other groups challenged the bill's provisions making it a crime punishable by $250,000 in fines and two years in prison to send "indecent" material that could be viewed by a minor over a computer network. They claim the act allows the prosecution of individuals for any computer message about sex.
The law seeks an immediate temporary injunction a blocking the provisions, saying they were unconsitutional and would cause irrepreable harm to First Amendment free speech rights if allowed to take affect.
